One Day Courses
LAY EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT
THE PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE, MONTREAL

The College is happy to share the theological resources within its community with congregations, presbyteries and other groups of Christians in Montreal and beyond. We are able to offer you a series of ONE DAY COURSES taught by College faculty or instructors appointed by the College. We believe these courses will be of interest to many, and will build up the life, faith and ministry effectiveness of the Church.

We welcome invitations from individual congregations, a group of congregations, or a whole presbytery to provide a ONE DAY COURSE hosted locally by those who invite us.

  • The College will provide the instructor, and the necessary teaching resources.
  • The hosting body will provide the space, coffee, and a simple lunch.
  • The hosting body will advertise the event and register participants, minimum 20.
  • Prices: $30 per person to audit, $20 for full time students, $40 for those taking the course for 1 credit in the Diploma in Lay Leadership

A ONE DAY COURSE provides 6 hours of instruction and learning which is open to all. If a participant wants to use a ONE DAY COURSE for credit towards the College's Diploma in Lay Leadership, then one credit will be given for attendance and the completion of a short assignment.

ONE DAY COURSE TOPICS

1. Our Reformed Roots: Discovering the Origins and Heritage of Presbyterianism
This course will help students discover who they are as Presbyterians and why we are the way we are. Some important Presbyterians distinctives will be covered, such as our approach to worship, the importance of the eldership, or the emphasis on God's sovereignty.

2. Holy Ground: The Meaning and Majesty of Worship
Many congregations are unsettled about worship. Will it be traditional or contemporary? This course will help you to think through the principles which ought to guide a congregation's worship life.

3. Creating Leaders Who Care: The Ministry of Elders
This course will look at the biblical origins of the eldership, the role of elders in the Reformed tradition, the pastoral and leadership responsibilities of elders according to the Book of Forms.

4. Bible 101: Making Sense of Holy Scripture
In this course you will learn how to become better readers and interpreters of the Bible. Many try to make a start but get bogged down in Bible reading. This course will help you to get the big picture and to appreciate the interpretative constraints that guide Christians in their listening to Scripture

5. Presbyterian Polity: An Introductory
This course will examine how Presbyterians govern themselves and how we can avoid some of the difficulties that congregations and presbyteries get into. Learn to navigate our rule book (The Book of Forms) as well as how to discern helpful and unhelpful procedure.

6. A Gospel Gallop: A One Day Exploration of the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke or John
A One Day Course on any one of the Gospels will provide an overview of that Gospel, its main teaching, and the distinctive purposes of the author.

7. Hey! That's our Congregation: Enhancing Congregational Health
This course will help congregational leaders see the congregation, not simply as a loose grouping of people, but as a body, with it's own culture and way of doing things. The course seeks to help leaders have a vision for renewed congregational life.

8. Ministry Then and Now: How New Testament Ministry Principles and Patterns Inform Today
This course will look at the origins, patterns and principles of ministry in the church of the New Testament. It will also examine how those patterns and principles need to be at work in the church now.

9. Christianity in a Global Perspective: Discovering the ‘world-wide web' of the Christian faith
This seminar will explore some of the dynamic changes transpiring in Christianity and influencing public faith across the globe. The discussions will be put into the framework of how God's people are contextualizing faith and practice in specific social and cultural situations."

10. Making Sense of the Trinity: Connecting the Trinity to Worship, Mission and Spirituality
