1. THE MASTER OF DIVINITY DEGREE (M.Div.)

The Presbyterian Church in Canada normally requires that candidates for the ministry complete the degree of Master of Divinity before ordination. The prerequisite for entering the M.Div. program is a bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university, preferably a Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.). The M.Div. is awarded by the College in conjunction with the Montreal Diocesan Theological College and the United Theological College, under the authority of the Joint Board of Theological Colleges, and is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada.

2. THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY CERTIFICATE

Older candidates for the ministry who lack a bachelor's degree and who have been assigned a special program by the Committee on Education of the Presbyterian Church in Canada are, upon successful completion of this program, awarded the General Assembly Certificate.

3. THE BACHELOR OF THEOLOGY DEGREE (B.Th.)

The first two years of the M.Div. program in the McGill consortium are made up of two years (60 credits) of academic theological studies at the Faculty of Religious Studies of McGill University for which the Bachelor of Theology degree is awarded by McGill. The B.Th. degree is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. Since students with a previous bachelor degree received advanced standing in the B.Th. program they enter in the B.Th. 2 year. The B.Th. 2 and 3 years are equivalent to M.Div. 1 and 2.

Details of the content and requirements of the Bachelor of Theology program are specified in the McGill Undergraduate Calendar and the McGill Faculty of Religious Studies website.

4. THE IN-MINISTRY YEAR (M.Div. 3) AND THE DIPLOMA IN MINISTRY

The last year of the M.Div. degree consists of a year (30 credits) of field-based, professional studies, the so-called In-Ministry-Year, offered jointly by the Presbyterian College and its two sister colleges in the consortium. Successful completion of the B.Th. degree and the In-Ministry-Year earns the Master of Divinity degree. The Diploma in Ministry is granted to candidates who lack the prerequisites for the M.Div. degree, or have taken the S.T.M. option (see 5 below), but who have successfully completed the In-Ministry-Year.

5. THE MASTER OF SACRED THEOLOGY DEGREE (S.T.M.)

Candidates for the ministry whose first degree was in Religious Studies with significant overlap with the McGill B.Th. program are eligible to apply for the McGill Master of Sacred Theology degree (S.T.M.) which involves two years (48 credits) of graduate studies. A minimum CGPA of 3.3 is required for acceptance into the S.T.M. In addition to the S.T.M. degree the Diploma in Ministry will be needed to fulfill church requirements for ordination.

6. THE DIPLOMA OF THE COLLEGE

The Diploma of the College is granted to Presbyterian candidates for the Ministry of Word and Sacrament at the College who have successfully completed the M.Div. degree, or the S.T.M. degree and the Diploma in Ministry, and concerning whom the faculty of the College can testify that they know of no objections to proceed to ordination. The Diploma of the College is required for ordination in The Presbyterian Church in Canada.

7. GRADUATE DEGREES IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES

McGill University offers, in addition to the Bachelor of Theology degree, graduate programs leading to the Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.) degree, and the Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Religious Studies. Information on admission to these programs can be found on the McGill Faculty of Religious Studies website.
