Principal – Position Open

The Board of Governors of The Presbyterian College, Montreal invites applications and presbytery nominations for the position of Principal. The appropriate candidate will be recommended by the Board to the General Assembly. The position will remain open until filled, although the Board’s desire is to bring a name to the General Assembly, June 2021 the latest, with a start date to be negotiated with the successful candidate.


The Presbyterian College, Montreal is one of three theological colleges of The Presbyterian Church in Canada. It is a member of the Montreal School of Theology and, through that membership, is affiliated with the School of Religious Studies, McGill University. Established in 1865, the primary purpose of the college is to shape transformational leaders who contribute to the renewal of Christ’s church and to God’s mission in the world. The Board is seeking a candidate who has the passion and commitment, skills and ability to advance the mission of the College and achieve its goals of growth and outreach.

Primary Role

The Principal provides spiritual, theological/academic and organizational leadership to the college, working collaboratively with its affiliated partners. Working with the Board of Governors, the Principle is the primary person in helping to shape the College’s vision and mission and their implementation. The Principal also serves as an ambassador for the College both within The Presbyterian Church in Canada and the broader church. Present conversations within the Montreal School of Theology may also require the Principal to oversee important transitions within that body.

The suitable candidate will have:

  • Proven organizational leadership experience and skills, able to cast a vision for the future
  • A strong academic background at a doctoral level (Ph.D. or D.Min.)
  • Experience in leading strategic planning processes and their implementation
  • Demonstrated effective congregational ministry and broader church experience
  • A personal and vibrant faith
  • Ability to work within a collaborative context
  • A commitment to encouraging the success of students, faculty and staff

The suitable candidate will be a minister of The Presbyterian Church in Canada or be eligible to become a minister within The Presbyterian Church in Canada.
