Master of Divinity

Master of Divinity (MDiv)

The Master of Divinity program equips women and men to be effective pastoral leaders—to serve Christ and the church faithfully and competently. This program is offered in collaboration with McGill University, a foremost North American University, and with the Montreal School of Theology. Together we are an historic ecumenical community of study within Quebec and Canada. Our MDiv program is accredited through the Association of Theological Schools, the primary accrediting body for theological education.

Integration and Internships

The MDiv program of The Presbyterian College/MST is unique in North America, combining two years of academic study with one year of professional formation (including an internship that represents 40% of the year). In this three-year program, the keyword is integration. We want to form leaders of integrity whose intellect and heart and practical service are all oriented to the service of others in the way of Christ. In years 1 and 2 of the program, you will study systematic theology, the Old and New Testaments, the history of the church, and the cultural dimensions of Christian faith. In the 3rd and final year you will focus on leadership in the church, the practice of preaching, the mission of congregations, and pastoral care of others.

Intercultural Encounter

A key component of our program is the third-year intercultural encounter, which presently takes the form of a one-week study tour in Cuba. Taking place in early January, this trip will engage you meaningfully with the life of the church in Cuba, as well as its culture and history. This experience will help you to explore what it means that ministry and mission always contextual; shaped by particular languages, cultures, and histories. Our program is also developing a meaningful component oriented toward learning and dialogue with Indigenous communities in Canada.

Length of Program and Residency

The MDiv at The Presbyterian College is a 3-year, 90-credit program. The first two years of the program are residential in Montreal. The final year may be pursued residentially in Montreal or in an online format at a distance (with 3 or 4 residential periods each term, involving travel back to Montreal). This means that your internship in the final year of the program could be in Toronto or Winnipeg or Halifax or Boston or Chicago. Synchronous components of the final-year, online classes make use of the Zoom conferencing platform, and a-synchronous components are through Moodle.

*Note that the Master of Divinity program is under the supervision of the Academic Committee of the Montreal School of Theology and is subject to the M.Div. Regulations that can be found here. There will also be additional, non-credit requirements that are set by your denomination.

Master of Divinity – with Specialization in Congregational Renewal & New Church Development

This new program is being developed for Master of Divinity students who feel called to either congregational renewal or the development of new faith communities.

As well as completing the core Master of Divinity program, students participate in two three-month placements in either new church development or in a congregation working through renewal.

Placements take place from May to July over two summers.
Students also carry out additional readings, participate in classes/workshops, and provide a written summary of their learnings to their peers, ensuring that all participants can learn from each other’s experiences.

A bursary, as specified by the Presbyterian Church of Canada, is available to eligible students.
